Student-Faculty Research Projects Application

Funding for student-faculty research will help with reasonable costs associated with a research project. Funding cannot be used to pay for tuition credits and a grant in the full amount requested is not guaranteed.

 

Application Schedule and Deadlines

• Spring 2020 – Deadline November 1, 2019.

• Summer/Fall 2020: Faculty/Student Grants & Independent Research – Deadline February 7, 2020.

• Awards will be announced on March 18, 2020.

Application Guidelines

In order to be considered for funding, projects should adhere to the following guidelines:

• The project should involve a scholarly/research study or creative process/goal.
• Students must be genuine contributors to the project.
• The project description should articulate a creative and clearly defined model for how students will participate and collaborate with faculty. What is the nature of collaboration with students? How many students will be involved in the project? How will they be involved? What are the student learning outcomes?
• Student stipends may be included in the budget submitted with the proposal. A typical stipend award is $360 per week for up to a maximum of 8 weeks. 
• On-campus room and board may also be included in the budget submitted with the proposal. (Room = $40 per week; Board = $175 per week)
• Faculty stipends may also be included in the budget submitted with the proposal. Maximum stipends should be calculated according to the following table.

• If research involves human subjects, project approval from the Institutional Review Board is required.
• If the research involves any international travel, a copy of the proposal must also be sent to Jill Russell, director of global education and chair of the Global Education Committee. The committee will review any geographic risks or concerns regarding the proposed destination. 
• Funding cannot be used to offset costs for LVC-sponsored study abroad programs.

Funding will not be awarded for projects that have been funded through two consecutive cycles. 

In its deliberations, the Arnold Grants Committee will work to distribute funding across multiple disciplinary areas. Priority will be given to those proposals that most closely align with the institution's strategic priorities.

 

Expectations

The results of the project, if successful, should be publishable in a scholarly journal in the field as a book or monograph or as a chapter in a compendium; or, it should be suitable for presentation at professional meetings in the field; or, it should be suitable for performance or displayed at appropriate venues for creative works.

Within three (3) months following the project's conclusion, the faculty project director will submit a final report to the senior associate dean of academic affairs summarizing the results of the project. 

Grant recipients may be invited to present at the College following the grant project.

• Résumé (student and faculty)
• Research Proposal Form
• Institutional Review Board Approval (if necessary)
• Budget Request Form - funding in the range of $3,000 to $10,000 may be requested, and all reasonable costs associated with a successful project may be included.
• If destination is outside the continental U.S., a copy of the proposal must be sent to Jill Russell, director of global education.
