Fellowship programs and scholarships are designed to give current students and recent graduates opportunities for research, personal development, and international experience. The list of fellowships provided below will allow you to examine the opportunities available, the selection criteria for each program, and the application procedures. Fellowships may include university coursework, independent research, special projects, or some combination. Grantees often have the opportunity to live and work in a different country.

If you are interested in pursuing any of these opportunities, please consult with Dr. Philip Benesch, associate professor of politics, who serves as faculty director of external scholarships and fellowships. He will collaborate with Geoffrey Roche, vice president of strategic initiatives and secretary of the college, to identify potential student candidates for various scholarship and fellowship opportunities, maintain information sources, and provide guidance to students, faculty, and alumni during the application process. Fellowships & Scholarships

American Association for the Advancement of Science-Mass Media, Science and Engineering Fellowships

Application Date: Jan. 15-16

Students Eligible: Applicants must be enrolled as college or university students (graduate, doctoral, or upper level undergraduates) — or within one year of a completed degree — in the physical, biological, geological, health, engineering, computer, or social sciences or mathematics in order to apply.Students enrolled in English, journalism, science journalism, or other non-technical fields are not eligible for these fellowships.Successful applicants are required to attend an orientation at AAAS headquarters at the beginning of the summer (early June) and a wrap-up session at the end of the summer (mid-August). They will prepare reports on the progress of their fellowships throughout their placement.

American Psychology Association Minority Fellowship Program

Application Date: Jan. 15 or May 1

Students Eligible: Our ultimate goal is to help promising graduate students, postdoctoral trainees and early career professionals achieve lasting success in areas related to ethnic minority psychology. To this end, the MFP provides financial support, professional development activities, and opportunities for professional and personal guidance. Ethnic minority students are encouraged to apply.

Program Information/Amount of Award: Be sure to check out the website, there are multiple scholarships posted. 1. Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (MHSAS) Predoctoral Fellowship: Promote culturally competent behavioral health services and policy for ethnic minority populations. 2. Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (MHSAS) Postdoctoral Fellowship: The goal of the Postdoctoral MHSAS Fellowship Program is to encourage and facilitate the specialized training of postdoctoral psychologists, Increase the number of ethnic minority psychologists providing behavioral health services and developing policy for ethnic minority populations. The program seeks to accomplish the following objectives, Promote culturally competent behavioral health services and policy for ethnic minority populations, Increase the number of ethnic minority psychologists providing behavioral health services and developing policy for ethnic minority populations. 3. Services for Transition Age Youth (STAY) Fellowship: MFP supports the following financial and training opportunities for terminal master’s students in order to further their development in areas related to mental health services for ethnic minority youth ages 16 through 25 and their families. This is a federally funded program to support terminal master’s level training in psychology that seeks to: Promote culturally competent mental health services for ethnic minority transition age youth and their families.Increase the number of ethnic minority service providers in psychology who are providing mental health services for this population. AMGEN Scholars Program

Application Date: Feb. 01, 2016

Students Eligible: Sophmore, Junior or non-graduating Senior GPA of 3.2 or above, interest in pursuing PHD or MD

Program Information/Amount of Award: Opportunity to engage in a hands-on research experience at many of the world's leading educational institutions. The Program seeks to increase learning and networking opportunities for students committed to pursuing science or engineering careers and to spark the interest and broaden the perspective of students considering scientific careers. Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program

Students Eligible: Must receive federal pell grant, Have proof of acceptance to a study abroad program that is eligible for credit at your institution, program must be at least 4 weeks long and may not exceed 1 year

Program Information/Amount of Award: The Gilman Scholarship Program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study and intern abroad and the countries and regions where they go by offering awards to U.S. undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints

Bioethics Predoctoral Fellowships at NIH

Captain Charles Thomas Cooper III Don Quixote Scholarship

Students Eligible: Financial need as determined by the applicant's FAFSA form; evidence of academic excellence; evidence of strong character and leadership. Contact the Department of Languages or Center for Global Education for additional information or to apply.

Program Information/Amount of the Award: All students are eligible to apply. The Don Quixote Scholarship will provide up to $3,500 for students to study in an LVC sponsored/supported program where French, German, or Spanish languages will be studied. 

The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace

Application Date: Jan. 15, 2016

Students Eligible: Applicants must be graduating seniors or students who have graduated during the last academic year. No one who has started graduate studies is eligible for consideration (except in cases where the student has completed a joint bachelor's/master's degree program). The Carnegie Endowment accepts applications only through participating universities via designated nominating officials.

Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Graduate Fellowship Program

Application Date: Sept. 21, 2017

Students Eligible: Applicants must be seeking admission to enter graduate school in the fall of 2018 for a two-year program at a U.S. university. They can be in their senior year of their undergraduate studies, graduating by June 2018, or they can be college graduates.

Program Information/Amount of Award: 

Attract and prepare students careers as diplomats in the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State. individuals interested in helping to shape a freer, more secure and prosperous world through U.S. foreign policy. DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service)

Application Date: Jan. 31, 2016

Students Eligible: Highly qualified undergraduate students are invited to apply for scholarships funding study, senior thesis research and/or internships in Germany. The goal of this program is to support study abroad in Germany and at German universities. Preference will be given to students whose projects or programs are based at and organized by a German university. Scholarships are available either as part of an organized study abroad program or an independent study abroad semester or year.

Eben Tisdale Fellowship

Application Date: Feb. 10, 2015

Students Eligible: The Tisdale Fellowship is designed for outstanding undergraduate students who are interested technology and public policy. The selection committee will be looking for students with a concrete record of academic achievement and civic mindedness. A background in computer science or other high-technology fields is helpful but not required.

Date of Program: June 6-July 31, 2015

Program Information/Amount of Award: Provides a full scholarship of $7,995 to attend the Institute on Business and Government Affairs (IBGA) as well as a $1,000 stipend. Through IBGA, Tisdale Fellows will be placed with a high-tech company, firm or trade association, take two classes worth six credits from George Mason University, and live in furnished apartments on George Washington University’s downtown campus. Fellows will also attend weekly issues seminar lunches hosted by Tisdale sponsors, as well as briefings at institutions such as the U.S. Capitol, Department of State, World Bank, and Federal Reserve.

Ford Foundation Pre-Doctoral Fellowships Programs

Fund for Education Abroad (FEA)

Application Date: February 1, 2019

Students Eligible: Undergraduate college or university student who is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. They must participate in a study abroad program that is eligible for credit at the student's home institution and of at least four weeks (28 days) in duration in the country/countries.

Program Information/Amount of Award: FEA awards scholarships of up to $10,000 for students who plan to study abroad for a full academic year; up to $5,000 for students who plan to study abroad during the fall or spring semester; and awards that are prorated by number of weeks in-country (minimum of $1,250) for students studying abroad during the summer. 

Preference: FEA gives preference to students with demonstrated financial need, and strongly encourages students to apply who represent a group that is traditionally underrepresented in education abroad. These groups include, but are not limited to: First-generation students, minority students, and community college students.

Gates Cambridge Scholarship

Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation

Application Date: Feb. 02, 2016

Students Eligible: Undergraduate junior or senior, The primary criteria for selection include: extensive record of campus and community service; commitment to a career in government or the nonprofit and advocacy sectors; communication skills and a high probability of becoming a "change agent"; and a strong academic record with likely acceptance to the graduate school of the candidate's choice.

The James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation

Students Eligible: One fellowship per state per year, outstanding student with a desire to teach the constitution in secondary school, bachelor's degree, but may also be a teacher.

The Mitchell Scholarship Program

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships

Program Information/Amount of Award: To encourage women of exceptional promise to prepare for careers in higher education and the professions.To continue and extend the historically important contributions of Monticello to the education of women.To extend the influence of Washington University by assisting in the advanced education of outstanding women who are likely to make significant contributions to higher education. All Olin Fellows receive full tuition remission for up to four years, provided they continue to make satisfactory academic progress. They are also eligible for a grant to defray the cost of professional travel. In addition, Fellows in PhD programs will receive a stipend equal to or in excess of other awards in their discipline.
