The fall semester program offers students the opportunity to take an introductory Mandarin language course, combined with relevant contextual courses that will help students further understand Chinese culture.
When Sara Urner '16 arrived in Shanghai, she had never spoken a word of Chinese in her life. That didn't slow her down though!
Students live & take courses at East China Normal University (pop. 26,000 students) in Shanghai, China. Shanghai is the largest city in China, with over 23 million inhabitants. Influenced by many Western ideas throughout history, Shanghai is a vibrant, hip city that is frequented by many international visitors. Great nightlife, shopping, and dining options add to this appeal for tourists. The University has many clubs and activities for students to get involved in. There are many other international students that attend the university (just under 4,000), and you will live amongst those from many cultures!
There is a mandatory set of pre-departure orientations at LVC for all students planning to participate in the program. Students also attend an extensive on-site orientation in Shanghai.
LVC students will live at the international student residence at East China Normal University. Students stay in shared rooms with a private bathroom. Students are responsible for preparing their own meals. Kitchens are located in each residence hall to prepare food, or students can pay per meal to eat in the dining hall located in the residence hall.
