Internships

We encourage students to participate in internships, both uncredited and for credit. They provide valuable opportunities for exploration and growth as students apply their knowledge and skills in a professional workplace. Internships also help students build real-world contacts and experiences that may refine their post-college plans. Our faculty members and the Breen Center for Graduate Success are available to provide individual help and suggestions with finding internships as students explore the diverse career opportunities for which English & Creative Writing prepares students.  

Students may complete up to three credits per semester of ENG 400 with a four-year limit of 12 credits. Non-credit internships are unlimited. 

• ENG 299, Professional Development for English Majors, must be completed before a student can apply to receive internship credit (ENG 400). This class identifies important resources on and off-campus, leads students to develop skills and materials necessary for the internship/job application process, and helps students to develop a workable strategic plan. 
• The Internship Agreement Form must be completed and submitted to the Registrar and the English Department Internship Supervisor no later than the end of the first week of classes. This application (available online or in the Office of the Registrar) requires student information and the following: 
  • Signatures of the Department Chair, Academic Advisor, and the English Program Internship Supervisor
  • Information from the On-site Internship Supervisor regarding duties and learning opportunities
  • Learning goals, objectives, and work assessment from the English Program Internship Supervisor 
• Two letters of recommendation (requested by students during ENG 299).
• The English Program Internship Supervisor will monitor student progress during ENG 400 through weekly journal entries, contact with on-site supervisors, and one-on-one meetings. 
• Final academic assessments include:
  • An online portfolio with updated résumé/CV
  • An 8-10 page reflection on the internship
  • A presentation for English Program faculty and students
