Thafany Minguez ’18, a double major in Spanish and sociology with a concentration in criminal justice, interned with the York City Police Department, which provided the experience and connections to launch her career in public service.
Sociology graduates are employed in a variety of fields, while others attend graduate school. Graduates of the past six classes are attending graduate school or working throughout Pennsylvania and in Maryland, North Carolina, and West Virginia. Job titles include police officer, drug and alcohol counselor, health advocate, autistic support instructor, psychiatric assistant, physical therapy aid, legal clerk, direct care worker, rehabilitation counselor, associate project director, and deputy sheriff. One even participated in the Disney Collegiate Program.
Others enrolled in graduate schools such as Johns Hopkins University, Temple University, and the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. They studied topics ranging from clinical mental health counseling and social work to industrial/organizational psychology and college student personnel.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the 2015 median pay for sociology graduates, with the master’s degree as the typical entry-level education, required, as $73,760 per year.
Cassandra Martinez is a school counselor for grades K-12 and helps college seniors with job applications, resumes, letters of intent, and more. Her love of mentoring has presented her with more jobs and a goal of pursuing a second master's degree.
Amanda Lubold '06 has combined her majors in sociology and biochemistry & molecular biology for a career as an assistant professor of sociology at Indiana State University.
