Program Description
Through lectures and hands-on laboratory investigations in state-of-the-art laboratories, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of molecular biology, pharmacology, immunology, biochemistry, and medical sciences. Students will learn how laboratory science can be translated into improved human health and will engage in investigative experiences that will allow them to apply their laboratory skills to real life problems. In addition, students will interact with practicing professionals in fields such as medicine, physical therapy, toxicology, genetic counseling, and biomedical laboratory research. The Health and Biomedical Sciences Summer Camp will provide a fun, challenging, and engaging college environment in which students will develop a deeper understanding of what it means to be a biomedical scientist and health professional.
Camp Goals
The goal for this camp is not only to provide students with a window into the scientific basis of human health and medicine but also to offer them a glimpse of college life through an engaging and challenging academic experience.
Campers will live in a college residence hall, participate in lectures and laboratories in the state-of-the-art Neidig-Garber Science Center, and eat their meals at the student loved Mund Dining Hall. Additionally, campers will be mentored by resident advisors who are current LVC science majors. Resident advisors are selected based on their expertise in the sciences, as well as their maturity and experience mentoring younger students.
Camp Details
When: The Health and Biomedical Sciences Summer Camp will be held from July 26-31, 2020.
Where: Lebanon Valley College, Annville, Pa.
Cost: $1,000 (this all-inclusive camp fee covers room and board, laboratory supplies, lecture supplies, evening activities, guest speakers, etc.)
Who: Rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors
Camp Director
Dr. Courtney Lappas, an associate professor of biology at Lebanon Valley College, is the director of the Health and Biomedical Sciences Summer Camp. Dr. Lappas received her B.S. with a double major in biology and chemistry at the University of Richmond, after which she received her Ph.D. in molecular pharmacology at the University of Virginia. Following the completion of her doctoral work, Dr. Lappas worked as a Fellow at the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Lappas has published numerous papers in prestigious peer-reviewed scientific journals, including the Journal of Experimental Medicine and Science, and she has co-authored an award-winning textbook on Forensic Toxicology. Her research is focused on the mechanisms underlying inflammatory disorders and the development of novel pharmacological interventions to limit or prevent such pathologies. Dr. Lappas has received a U.S. patent for her work. Dr. Lappas incorporates her experience in translational research into her teaching and mentoring, and she is thrilled to be leading the camp.
