Earth Days 2019 Schedule

Sustainability Oratorical Contest

April 3rd at 6:00 pm (Bishop Library Atrium)

Interested students will submit a speech manuscript and bibliography by March 4th. Judges will review the manuscripts and choose the top six contestants to give a 5-7 min speech on April 3rd. The 2019 topic is “Explain how you would improve environmental sustainability on LVC’s campus by developing a proposal for a new sustainability initiative.”

Cooking with Insects

April 10th from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm (NG 130)

Join Dr. Unger’s Human Nutrition class to learn about the environmental and nutritional benefits of adding insects to your diet. Lancaster County Naturalist Lisa J. Sanchez will give an informative presentation, and then prepare some insects for people to try. There are a limited number of spots; please contact Dr. Erica Unger to reserve a seat.

Christian Parenti: Storms and the State: How the Political Economy of Government Will Change in the Age of Climate Crisis (Colloquium Presentation)

April 11th at 5:30 pm (Zimmerman Recital Hall, Suzanne H. Arnold Art Gallery)

When climate change-related crises like mass flooding hit, people turn to the government for assistance. This turn to government happens almost regardless of ideology because only the government has the means to respond to the appropriate scale. How a state response reflects its existing capacities and ideological trajectory, but the management of climate disaster and recovery, in turn, reshape the state and politics. In this lecture, Christian Parenti, a contributing editor at The Nation, Puffin Foundation Writing Fellow at The Nation Institute, and author of several critically acclaimed books, including Tropic of Chaos: Climate Change and The New Geography of Violence (2011), will explore the political economy of state formation and evolution in relation to environmental disaster.

Service Event: Invasive Plant Control at Wood Thrush Research Preserve

April 24th at 1:00 pm (meet near the cow at Facilities)

Invasive plants spread aggressively, outcompete native plant species, and can reduce habitat for wildlife. Join Dr. Urban to learn about invasive plant ecology and help remove invasive species throughout the Wood Thrush Research Preserve.

Arboretum Tour

Everyone is invited to join Dr. Susan Verhoek on a walking tour of LVC’s campus arboretum. Learn about the impressive history of our arboretum and how to identify our campus trees.

Electronics Recycling

April 25th between 11:00 am - 2:00 pm (North Side of Lynch)

College students and employees can drop off certain electronics for recycling. Service Event: Lebanon County Tree Planting

April 26th and 27th from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm and 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm (Locations assigned the week before planting)

The Lebanon Valley Conservancy and The Chesapeake Bay Foundation are partnering for the Keystone 10 million tree partnership. Volunteers are needed to help plant 1000 trees in Lebanon County. You will need to provide your own transportation. Use this link to register.

BioBlitz

April 27th anytime between 8:00 am - 4:00 pm (meet by the cow outside Facilities Services)

Join Environmental Science and Biology students as they categorize as many plants, animals, protists, and fungi found at the Wood Thrush Research Preserve. A BioBlitz is a collective citizen-science biological survey with the goal to record as many species in a given area over 24 hours. Add your expertise or join us to learn about how to identify common plants and animals.

Service Event: Annual Lebanon County United Way Day of Caring Spring Cleanup in Quittie Creek Nature Park

April 27th from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm (meet at the main entrance to Quittie Creek Nature Park off Bachman Road next to the Swingholm Pedestrian Bridge)

Volunteers will gather at the Swingholm Pedestrian Bridge in Quittie Creek Nature Park in Annville (at the southern end of Bachman Rd.) and be divided into crews to spread mulch, clear trails, remove invasive species, pick up trash, and in general spruce up the Nature Park for the coming summer. Join us!
