Customizing an Experience

Digital communications student Alex Bushong poses for a photo in New Zealand while studying abroad

Alex Bushong ’18 originally enrolled at Lebanon Valley as a computer science major, until he found digital communications (DigiCOM) to be a better fit for his interests.

“The computer science major is intense,” Bushong said. “You learn a lot, but I soon became interested in the entire web development process.”

The Digital Communications Program focuses a great deal on human-centered design, which Bushong described as a problem-solving approach to making the digital experience simple and user friendly.

“DigiCOM forces you to look at the bigger picture,” Bushong said. “Not only do I have the skills from computer science, but I can see the whole process holistically, which makes me a little more versatile when applying for internships.”

Bushong, who is pursuing a concentration in programming, has gained practical experience in his field through two internships.

As an intern with the College’s Information Technology Department, Bushong completed projects and site maintenance for www.lvc.edu. He worked to improve the functionality of different digital applications that LVC uses, which would grow the use of technology across campus.

Bushong also completed a fall 2017 internship at AndCulture, a creative solutions company based in Harrisburg.

“I wasn’t planning on tackling another internship, but Professor [Joel] Kline had an amazing connection,” Bushong said. “It was great to work in such a professional environment and to work on products for real-world clients.”

At AndCulture, Bushong was a development intern, where he helped design wireframes and develop business technology for web applications. After graduation in May, he hopes to pursue similar work in usability programming.

"I feel that DigiCOM has equipped me with the skillset needed to stand out and find a great job after I graduate."
