Insider/Outsider will run from Nov. 1–Dec. 15, 2019 at the Suzanne H. Arnold Art Gallery of Lebanon Valley College. The exhibit spans the ongoing development of social realism, which established itself as a strong current in American visual art beginning with the Ashcan School in the first decade of the 20th century. A shock to many early viewers, social realist art ignored academic traditions and center-staged subjects culled from the working class, the underclass, immigrant enclaves, and the destitute, and it achieved its aims without idealization or sentimental gloss. Insider/Outsider follows this current into the 21st century with paintings, prints, and photographs of contemporary visions of looking at the overlooked to further social activism.
The opening reception for Insider/Outsider will take place Friday, Nov. 1, 5–7 p.m. in Zimmerman Recital Hall of the Suzanne H. Arnold Art Gallery. The reception is free and open to the public.
