Job Shadowing Helps Student Envision Her Future

Drue Bahajak, O.D., ’12 knew she was going to be a doctor, but figuring out what type of doctor proved harder than she thought. She picked Lebanon Valley College for all the reasons we love—academic reputation, small class sizes, personalized attention, and generous scholarships. 

Bahajak thrived as a biology major with a chemistry minor, getting involved throughout campus. She conducted research with Dr. Wally Patton [associate professor of chemistry], served as treasurer of the College’s biology honor society, Beta Beta Beta, and assisted her fellow students as a teaching assistant for general biology and anatomy. She also helped with admission, serving as a mentor for the Day at The Valley program. “I enjoyed talking to prospective students, having them observe my morning classes, and telling them about my experiences in the Biology Department.” 

As Bahajak entered her senior year, she needed to make a decision as to what and where she was going to study after LVC. Under the advisement of Dr. Kristen Boeshore, assistant professor of biology and director of the Health Professions Committee, Bahajak started job shadowing. She covered general practice, pediatrics, and sports medicine. However, it wasn’t until Dr. Boeshore set up a meeting with Marianne Boltz, O.D., ’92, pediatric optometrist at Penn State Health, Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, that Bahajak found her calling. “Marianne was great, she helped me shape what I wanted to do next. I’m not sure where I would be without her mentoring,” said Bahajak.  

“I feel privileged to be able to give back to LVC since the school has played such a significant role in getting me to where I am today," added Bahajak. “I appreciate the opportunity to share my story and look forward to helping current Dutchmen with their career aspirations.”

After graduating from Salus University Pennsylvania College of Optometry, with honors, in 2016, Bahajak now specializes in primary/comprehensive care, contact lenses, and ocular disease at Kirman Eye, Hummelstown, Pa. 

Bahajak loved her LVC experience so much, her youngest brother followed in her footsteps and is currently finishing up a physics degree. “I love watching Drice thrive at LVC.”
