Meet Admissions Counselor: E.J. Smith

E.J. Smith, Lebanon Valley College’s assistant director of admission, joined the staff 10 years ago after working as a high school guidance counselor for 15 years. 

Smith, originally from New Jersey, graduated from LVC in 1990 with a bachelor’s of social work. During his time at The Valley, Smith fell in love with the family atmosphere of the campus.

“The academics, family feel, and connections students will have with everyone on campus set LVC above other colleges,” Smith said. 

Smith’s favorite part of the College has changed over the years. As a student, Smith loved being a member of the cross country and track and field teams. Now as a member of the full-time staff, Smith loves working with his coworkers.

“The family I have here and the people I work with, we really work together as a team,” Smith said.

On a day-to-day basis, Smith’s job is always changing. Smith works with all majors, but his primary focus is health science majors, which includes physical therapy, athletic training, speech-language pathology, and exercise science.

His job duties include visiting high schools for recruitment, scheduling college day and overnight visits, meeting students and families on campus, coordinating Valley Ambassadors [admission tour guides], acting as the athletic liaison, and overseeing group visits.

“I would have a hard time performing this job if I didn’t believe so strongly in this place,” Smith said. “We really do help our students become successful.”

Smith believes the best-selling feature of The College is the welcoming family feel that the whole campus provides. He believes LVC students and staff want The College to excel, and this sets the campus apart from other institutions.
