"Save"-oring Every Moment

When it comes to Division III ice hockey, Jill Moffatt ’20 leads the pack. She was just named to the Middle Atlantic All-Conference Team and broke the NCAA record for most saves in a single season, but hockey isn’t the only thing Moffatt is succeeding in at The Valley.

Moffatt, who is from Canada, decided to become a Dutchman because of LVC’s combination of women’s ice hockey and top tier educational opportunities. Despite coming into college with an interest in physical therapy, Moffatt decided that she felt more at home in the Digital Communications (DigiCOM) Department.

“I feel like DigiCOM, the professors and the students, are kind of like a family,” Moffatt said. “I’m with the same group of students in the majority of my classes and the class sizes are small, so it’s super nice.”

Even though she is only a second-year student, Moffatt has already completed two internships with TD Bank back home in Canada and is starting her third in May. She spent the summers rotating around teams and working on a series of different projects dealing with the bank’s communications.

“It was interesting to see the things I learned at school come into play at my job,” Moffatt said.

Because of how important hockey is in her life, Moffatt dreams of one day combining her appreciation for the sport with her major by working for a large hockey company. She would love to work in user experience and design, as those are her two favorite aspects of digital communications. 

Breaking records as a sophomore in a program that is only two years old is no easy feat. Moffatt has played more than 1,000 minutes in goal during games alone. Working with a new program is a learning experience for everyone involved, but the women’s ice hockey team has found a silver lining.

“It’s cool to be a part of something new,” Moffatt said. “We get to make it our own and make it into anything we want.”

Moffatt says that her favorite LVC ice hockey memory was her first shutout during her freshman year, a game that finished out their inaugural season with a strong win. 

It’s clear that whether it’s on the ice or in the classroom, LVC can expect big things from Moffatt in the future.
