Andrew Bender (1906) and Ruth Engle Bender (1915) Scholarship in Music and Chemistry

Dr. Andrew Bender earned his degree from LVC in 1906 and served on the chemistry faculty from 1921-1951, including time as department chair. Ruth Engle Bender graduated from the College in 1915, joined the music department faculty in 1918, served as director of the College’s conservatory of music, and taught music theory and piano until 1971.

D. Clark and Edna J. Carmean '59 Scholarship Fund in Music

The D. Clark and Edna J. Carmean '59 Scholarship Fund is awarded to freshman music candidates of exceptional promise as judged by academic records, test scores, teacher's recommendations, and required LVC auditions. Dr. Clark Carmean is dean of admission emeritus and former music professor. He and his wife Edna dedicated their lives to LVC and its students. They were both granted honorary doctorates from LVC in 1985.

Richard F. and Pauline C. Charles Art Acquisition Fund

The Richard F. and Pauline C. Charles Art Acquisition Fund is to be used for the acquisition of artwork by the College and for its Suzanne H. Arnold Gallery. Dick Charles is vice president of advancement emeritus, having served the College in that capacity from 1988-1997.

Pierce A. Getz '51 Scholarship Fund

The Pierce A. Getz '51 Scholarship Fund is awarded to students pursuing a bachelor of arts in music with a concentration in organ, sacred music, or voice. A 1951 alumnus of LVC, Dr. Pierce Getz served as professor of music for 31 years where he conducted the College's Concert Choir.

Theodore D. Keller '48 Theater Fund for Wig and Buckle

The Theodore D. Keller '48 Theater Fund is awarded annually to The Wig and Buckle Society to help fund the production of one or more theatrical performances. Ted Keller, a 1948 graduate of Lebanon Valley College, taught in the English department from 1949-1965 and served as the College's dean of men.

Thomas A. Lanese Scholarship Fund in Music Education

The Thomas A. Lanese Scholarship Fund is awarded to freshman students majoring in Music Education who have demonstrated a high standard of academic and music accomplishment. Thomas Lanese was a gifted composer who served as associate professor emeritus of strings, conducting and theory at LVC.

Marsha Pickwell Memorial Scholarship

The Marsha Pickwell Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a sophomore or junior music major who has demonstrated outstanding pianistic ability and promise. Marsha Pickwell served on the music faculty and taught piano until her tragic death in an automobile accident in 1963.

Robert W. Smith Award in Music

The Robert W. Smith Award is awarded to an outstanding freshman music major. Robert Smith was a professor at LVC starting in 1951 and taught for 32 years. He was Director of the Music Department for 22 of those 32 years.

Frank E. Stachow Scholarship Fund in Music Education and Woodwinds

The Frank E. Stachow Scholarship Fund is awarded to junior or senior music education majors with preference given to a student studying soprano clarinet or other woodwind instruments. Frank Stachow was a teacher, mentor, and friend to a generation of some of the finest musicians at LVC.

James M. Thurmond Music Education Scholarship

The James M. Thurmond Music Education Scholarship is awarded to a senior music education major and a member of the symphonic band or concert choir. Dr. James Thurmond is a professor emeritus of music having taught from 1954-1979. He also served 19 years in the Navy where he was principal horn player in the Navy Band in the 1930s.
